Energy Forum 29.5.2017 – Focus on Future Energy Systems

Energy production, distribution and pricing as well as consumption, are fundamentally important issues for societies, businesses and households. We talk about green energy and sustainable energy solutions. What are these, actually? How does digitalization fit into all this? What kind of future energy sources and systems will we be seeing ahead of us? All this and more is discussed in the MA Institute Energy Forum – come, learn and discuss with top experts in the field!

Frank Wolak

Frank A. Wolak is the Holbrook Working Professor of Commodity Price Studies in the Department of Economics at Stanford University. His fields of specialization are Industrial Organization and Econometric Theory. His recent work studies methods for introducing competition into infrastructure industries — telecommunications, electricity, water delivery and postal delivery services — and on assessing the impacts of these competition policies on consumer and producer welfare. From January 1, 1998 to March 31, 2011, Wolak was the Chair of the Market Surveillance Committee of the California Independent System Operator for electricity supply industry in California.  He is a visiting scholar at University of California Energy Institute and a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER). He currently directs the Program on Energy and Sustainable Development (PESD) in the Freeman-Spogli Institute (FSI) for International Studies.   From January 2012 to December 2013, Wolak was also a member of the Emissions Market Advisory Committee (EMAC) for Californias Market for Greenhouse Gas Emissions allowances.   This committee advised the California Air Resources Board on the design and monitoring of the states cap-and-trade market for Greenhouse Gas Emissions allowances.

Maria Kopsakangas-Savolainen

Maria Kopsakangas-Savolainen is a Research Professor at the Finnish Environment Institute and University of Oulu Business School. She has large teaching and professional experience including testimonies in the Finnish market court, referee in several journals and consulting Finnish Government bodies. Currently she is a vice president of the Finnish Climate Panel, Associate Editor of the journal Energy Efficiency and member of the board in the journals Finnish Economic Papers and Kansantaloudellinen Aikakauskirja. Her research focus is on the analysis of the operation of the electricity market. She has studied the impact of the industry structure to the efficiency and equilibrium outcome of the electricity industry. Also cost efficiency analysis (by using SFA) as well as welfare analysis of different regulation schemes has been on her interest. Recently main emphasis of her research has concerned sustainable energy economics such as the effects of real-time pricing on long run efficient investments, efficient use of renewable energy, value of intermittent energy and promotion market access for renewable energy. She has done both theoretical and empirical studies. In empirical studies the applied methodologies have been based on simulation methods and econometrics.
